About Me
Dr. John Welling is a board-certified, fellowship-trained surgeon specializing in cataract surgery, advanced lens implants, laser vision correction, corneal transplants, and the treatment of various corneal and external eye diseases. He provides comprehensive eye care, including general ophthalmology, diabetic eye exams, and management of uveitis.
Dr. Welling is actively involved in surgical education, serving as a lead instructor for cataract surgery courses at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He also serves on the ASCRS Surgical Skills Transfer Committee and has taught advanced corneal transplant techniques internationally. His commitment to global eye care led him to co-found and lead the Daybreak Vision Project, a non-profit that provides sight-restoring cataract surgery in underserved areas, and to establish the Global Partnership Program at Medical Eye Center, which funds hundreds of cataract surgeries in Africa each year.
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Welling spent a year as an international fellow in Africa and Asia and later served as the Country Medical Coordinator for the Cure Blindness Project in Ghana. His early experience as a missionary in Southern Africa inspired his dedication to addressing healthcare disparities. Outside of work, he enjoys outdoor activities with his family in the Pacific Northwest.
