About Me
Dr. Richard Watson is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon serving the Birmingham area. He completed medical school and ophthalmology residency at Tulane University, followed by a two-year retinal surgery fellowship at West Virginia University. Before returning to Alabama in 2020, he served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School while practicing at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. He now leads an independent, patient-focused practice dedicated exclusively to retina care.Dr. Watson cares for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal tears and detachments, macular pucker and macular hole, retinal vein occlusion, and other complex retinal disorders. He pairs clear explanations with modern imaging and in-office treatments to help patients understand their diagnosis, choose among options, and protect their vision. His goal is to provide thoughtful, evidence-based care in a calm, accessible setting—and to partner with your referring doctors to achieve the best possible outcome.
