Dr. Reginald Sanders

Dr. Reginald J. Sanders is a retina specialist and vitreoretinal surgeon at The Retina Group of Washington, dedicated to treating a wide range of retinal diseases and conditions. He emphasizes a comprehensive care approach, leveraging his extensive expertise to provide patients with the highest quality of care.

After graduating with honors from the University of Virginia with a degree in Biochemistry, Dr. Sanders earned his medical degree from Yale University. He completed an internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital, followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital, where he was chosen Co-Chief Resident. He then completed a fellowship in Vitreo-retinal Diseases and Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School, serving as Chief Fellow. Dr. Sanders is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and holds clinical professorships at Georgetown University and Howard University medical schools. He has served as Chief of the Retina Service at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center since 2001 and has been actively involved in research, serving as a principal investigator for landmark treatments such as Lucentis for wet age-related macular degeneration.

Dr. Sanders has been consistently recognized for his clinical skills, receiving honors such as Washingtonian "Top Doctor," "Best Doctors in America," and "America's Top Ophthalmologists" multiple times, and was a charter inductee into the Retina Hall of Fame in 2017. He has also filled leadership roles in national professional societies and was recently named President of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS).
