About Me
Dr. James Winebrake is an ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgery fellow at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He cares for adults with diseases of the retina and vitreous, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and retinal tears and detachments. He also manages urgent symptoms such as new flashes and floaters and coordinates same-day evaluation when a retinal tear is suspected. His care is thorough, efficient, and grounded in clear explanations so patients understand their diagnosis and options.
Dr. Winebrake earned his medical degree at Weill Cornell Medicine, completed internship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and ophthalmology residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. At UIC he is training in advanced imaging, in-office injections, laser treatments, and modern small-gauge vitrectomy. He works closely with referring optometrists and surgeons to deliver timely, evidence-based care designed to protect and restore sight.
