About Me
Dr. T. Y. Alvin Liu is a retina and vitreous diseases specialist at the Wilmer Eye Institute. Originally from Hong Kong, he speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. He provides medical and surgical care for vitreoretinal conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema, retinal vascular occlusion, retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, epiretinal membrane, and macular hole.
Dr. Liu leads the Wilmer Precision Ophthalmology Center of Excellence and focuses on how artificial intelligence can improve screening, diagnosis, prognostication, and treatment for eye disease—especially retinal disease. He is also involved in research on pathologic myopia and the management of severe ocular trauma. His training includes an M.D. from Columbia University (2012), ophthalmology residency at Johns Hopkins (2016), and surgical and medical retina fellowship training at Johns Hopkins (2018).
