About Me
Dr. Robert L. Avery is a retina specialist and vitreoretinal surgeon who founded California Retina Consultants in Santa Barbara. He completed his medical degree and ophthalmology residency at Johns Hopkins University's Wilmer Eye Institute, followed by a vitreoretinal fellowship at Duke University under Dr. Robert Machemer, a pioneer in vitreous surgery. Dr. Avery's clinical focus is on the diagnosis and treatment of complex retinal conditions, and he played a key role in the development and clinical use of anti-VEGF therapies, which have revolutionized care for retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
Dr. Avery is actively involved in retinal research, with a focus on angiogenesis and VEGF. He co-founded the California Retina Research Foundation, which conducts numerous clinical trials to advance treatment options for retinal disorders. He is a member of several leading professional societies and serves on the Medical Leadership Board of Retina Consultants of America.
