About Me

Dr. Matthew G. J. Trese is a board-certified, fellowship-trained vitreoretinal specialist caring for patients throughout southeast Michigan. His practice focuses on medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular holes, and retinal tears and detachments. He combines meticulous examination with the latest diagnostics and treatments, and partners with each patient to explain findings and map out practical, effective care plans. Dr. Trese earned a BA in Evolutionary, Population and Organismal Biology at the University of Colorado and an MA in Medical Sciences at Boston University. He received his DO from Michigan State University, completed a transitional year at Beaumont Hospital – Oakland University, and finished ophthalmology residency at Beaumont Eye Institute, where he served patients across the region. He then completed a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at Associated Retinal Consultants. Dr. Trese has co-authored peer-reviewed publications, presented research, and participated in clinical trials, reflecting his commitment to advancing retinal care while keeping patient experience at the center.
