About Me
Dr. Matthew Wessel is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous. He has been with the Retina Institute of Illinois since completing his vitreoretinal fellowship in 2013. Dr. Wessel brings extensive expertise in diagnosing and treating complex retinal conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disorders, macular holes and puckers, retinal tears and detachments, and hereditary retinal disorders.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Wessel is actively involved in research and has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed articles on retinal diseases. He serves on staff at several hospitals, including Advocate Condell Medical Center, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Ascension Saint Alexius, Endeavor Health/Northshore, and Northwestern Medicine. He sees patients at multiple locations throughout the Chicagoland area.
Dr. Wessel completed his ophthalmology residency and a two-year surgical vitreoretinal fellowship at Weill Cornell/New York Presbyterian, where he served as chief resident. He earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and his undergraduate degree in Economics from Harvard College.
