About Me
Dr. Joan W. Miller is an internationally recognized ophthalmologist specializing in retinal disorders, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD). She serves as the David Glendenning Cogan Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and has held leadership roles as former Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and Ophthalmologist-in-Chief at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Over her career, Dr. Miller has made groundbreaking contributions to the treatment of retinal diseases. She and her colleagues pioneered photodynamic therapy using verteporfin, the first pharmacological therapy shown to reduce vision loss in AMD. Her research also identified the critical role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in ocular neovascularization, leading to the development of anti-VEGF therapies now used worldwide.
Today, Dr. Miller continues to advance the field through research on the genetics of AMD, strategies for early intervention, and neuroprotective therapies for retinal diseases. She is committed to improving outcomes for patients with sight-threatening conditions.
