Dr. Carvounis was born in Vancouver, Canada, and grew up in Athens, Greece. He completed his training at the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Mayo Clinic, and George Washington University before completing a fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. He has been based in Houston, Texas since 2005 and is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
