Dr. Matthew Sommers

Dr. Matthew Sommers is an ophthalmologist at Scott & Christie Eyecare with specialized training in glaucoma. He earned his MD from the Robert Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, completed ophthalmology residency at UPMC, and pursued fellowship training in glaucoma at UPMC. Dr. Sommers provides comprehensive glaucoma care—from careful diagnosis and monitoring to office-based laser procedures and surgical interventions—as well as cataract surgery and routine medical eye care. His research experience spans access to glaucoma care, handheld tonometry, operating room efficiency, and multi-institution collaboration, and he brings that problem-solving mindset to everyday patient decisions. He is passionate about community service, having volunteered with outreach programs that deliver free eye care to underserved patients. Outside the clinic, he enjoys hiking, climbing, soccer, and baseball. Patients value his approachable manner, clear explanations, and commitment to long-term vision preservation.
