About Me
Matthew Karl, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon with SightMD. He cares for patients with retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, macular holes, and epiretinal membranes, and also performs cataract surgery when appropriate. He aims to explain findings in plain language, set expectations clearly, and recommend the least invasive option that can reliably restore or protect vision.
Dr. Karl graduated from Georgetown University, completed medical school and ophthalmology residency at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, and pursued a two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at The Ohio State University. He has been recognized with honors including election to Alpha Omega Alpha, a fellowship teaching award, and a departmental award for excellence in ophthalmology. Above all, he strives to deliver the same careful, state-of-the-art care he would want for his own family.
