Meet Dr. Maria Fernandez-Ruiz

About Me

Dr. Cristina Fernandez is a fellowship-trained, board-certified pediatric ophthalmologist with extensive experience in the medical and surgical care of children’s eye conditions and strabismus in both children and adults. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Puerto Rico, earned her MD from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine (Alpha Omega Alpha), and completed ophthalmology residency at the Kresge Eye Institute (Wayne State University). She then pursued subspecialty fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine.Dr. Fernandez treats amblyopia, pediatric cataracts, blocked tear ducts, eyelid ptosis, and complex strabismus. She also provides screening and treatment for retinopathy of prematurity and comprehensive pediatric eye exams. Fluent in English and Spanish, she is known for a warm, clear, family-centered approach that helps parents and children understand diagnoses and choose the safest, most effective plan together.
