About Me
Dr. Karen Alvarez is a board-certified pediatric ophthalmologist who completed advanced fellowship training at Baylor University-Texas Children’s Hospital. She provides comprehensive medical and surgical eye care for children and adults, with particular expertise in strabismus (misaligned eyes), pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, amblyopia (lazy eye), ptosis (drooping eyelid), tear duct blockages, and retinopathy of prematurity. Dr. Alvarez enjoys working with children and has a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of neuro-ophthalmic conditions in young patients.
After serving as a pediatric ophthalmologist and refractive surgeon in the U.S. Army, Dr. Alvarez spent seven years in Jacksonville, Florida, where she held several leadership roles, including Chief Pediatric Ophthalmologist at Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital and Director of the pediatric neuro-ophthalmology clinic at Nemours Children’s Specialty Care. She is returning to South Florida to serve her community and be closer to family.
Dr. Alvarez is a Fellow of the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology and an active member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. She is fluent in English and Spanish, allowing her to communicate effectively with a diverse patient population.
