About Me

Dr. Manuel A. Páez Escamilla is a vitreoretinal surgeon at Palmetto Retina Center who cares for patients with the full spectrum of medical and surgical retina conditions. Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, he graduated summa cum laude from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara School of Medicine and went on to broad, binational training spanning Mexico, the United States, and Canada. He completed an ocular oncology research/clinical fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, a year of general surgery training at UT Southwestern, an ophthalmology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and the McGill Surgical Retina Fellowship in Montréal. Earlier in his career, he also trained at Guadalajara’s Civil Hospital, where he participated in international research and earned recognition for scientific presentations. Dr. Páez Escamilla has earned the FICO designation after passing the ICO Basic, Clinical, and Advanced examinations with merit and is board certified in both Mexico and the United States. He is fluent in English, Spanish, and French and enjoys fitness, exploring new cuisines, and time with his wife. His practice combines meticulous surgery, evidence-based care, and a warm, bilingual bedside manner for patients across the Columbia, South Carolina region.
