About Me

Kanwal Singh Matharu, MD, is an assistant professor and ophthalmologist at University of Iowa Health Care with expertise spanning cornea and external eye disease, refractive surgery, and uveitis. He values listening closely to patients’ concerns and partnering on solutions, noting that eyesight is precious and deserves thoughtful, individualized care. Dr. Matharu earned a BA in molecular biology from Princeton University and an MD from McGovern Medical School in Houston. He completed an ophthalmology residency at Baylor College of Medicine, followed by fellowships in Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery at UPMC and in Global Ophthalmology at Stanford University. His practice includes advanced corneal transplantation and reconstruction techniques, management of inflammatory eye disease, and vision-correcting procedures. He is committed to research and health-equity initiatives, and provides care at Iowa River Landing and the main medical center in Iowa City.
