Dr. Christopher Toomey

Dr. Christopher B. Toomey is a vitreoretinal surgeon and physician-scientist at UC San Diego’s Shiley Eye Institute. He cares for adults with the full range of medical and surgical retina conditions and is board-certified in ophthalmology. His clinical work spans advanced repair of retinal detachment, management of macular diseases, and treatment of diabetic and vascular retinal disorders. He complements patient care with active laboratory research on the early and intermediate stages of dry age-related macular degeneration.

Dr. Toomey earned combined MD and PhD degrees from Duke University School of Medicine, completed ophthalmology residency at UC San Diego, and pursued vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins. He has been recognized with honors including a Heed Fellowship and maintains a robust publication record.
