About Me
Dr. April Maa is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who provides medical and surgical eye care for Veterans within the Veterans' Health Administration in Atlanta, Minneapolis, and at Grady Memorial Hospital. She is dedicated to expanding access to eye care through innovative telemedicine programs and is the founder of the Technology-based Eye Care Services (TECS) program, which offers comprehensive eye screenings and eyeglasses to Veterans in underserved areas. Dr. Maa also directs the National Subspecialty Ophthalmology Network (NSON), a national tele-ophthalmology hub that provides subspecialty eye care services via telehealth to Veterans across the Midwest and the entire country.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Maa is actively involved in clinical research, focusing on tele-ophthalmology, diabetic retinopathy, artificial intelligence, and medical education. She holds leadership roles at the national level, including serving as the Tele-Eye Co-Lead for the VA Office of Connected Care and as President of the Association of VA Ophthalmologists. Her contributions have been recognized with several national awards, including the VA Mark Wolcott Award for Excellence in Clinical Leadership and the American Academy of Ophthalmology Secretariat Award for Federal Affairs.
Dr. Maa is committed to training the next generation of eye care professionals, teaching medical students, ophthalmology residents, and other trainees through lectures and direct clinical supervision. Her work bridges clinical practice, research, and education to improve eye care access and outcomes for Veterans and other patients.
