About Me

Dr. Akshay S. Thomas is a retina specialist who brings expertise in uveitis and ocular inflammatory diseases to Tennessee Retina. He completed his medical education at Case Western Reserve University, where he was recognized with membership in Alpha Omega Alpha and the Alfred Maschke Award. His ophthalmology residency was at the Casey Eye Institute of Oregon Health & Science University, followed by a two-year fellowship in medical and surgical retina at Duke University, where he received the Hornaday Fellow and Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Award. He also completed a second fellowship in uveitis and clinical ocular immunology at the Casey Eye Institute.

Dr. Thomas has authored or co-authored over 75 scientific papers and book chapters, and has co-edited textbooks on retinal diseases and vitreoretinal surgery. He serves as the program director for the vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Tennessee Retina and is active on committees for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, American Uveitis Society, and Vit Buckle Society. His research focuses on clinical trial endpoints in uveitis, multimodal retinal imaging, and surgical techniques.

He has a particular interest in the medical and surgical management of adult and pediatric patients with ocular inflammatory diseases, including uveitis, scleritis, and orbital inflammation. His clinical expertise also covers macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, and complex retinal detachment. Dr. Thomas sees patients in multiple Tennessee Retina offices.
