About Me
Dr. Ahmara G. Ross is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of Pittsburgh and pursued fellowships in Neuro-ophthalmology and Glaucoma at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania. With a PhD from Thomas Jefferson University, she integrates advanced research into her clinical practice. Dr. Ross cares for patients with glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmologic disorders, performing a variety of ocular surgeries including cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and incisional glaucoma procedures.
She diagnoses, treats, and manages a range of optic neuropathies, approaching glaucoma as a neuro-degenerative disease that requires sight-preserving therapies. Her work extends beyond basic science to address socio-economic barriers in healthcare, ensuring that treatment is accessible to all patients.
Since joining the faculty in 2017, Dr. Ross has been awarded an NIH K08 Career Development grant to investigate the neuroprotective potential of gene therapy targeting retinal ganglion cells for chronic glaucoma. She also collaborates on research using gene therapy for other optic neuropathies such as those caused by trauma, compression, and inflammation.
