Dr. Sunil Bellur

Dr. Sunil Bellur is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist at Washington Eye Institute, specializing in medical retina and uveitis. He diagnoses and treats complex retinal and inflammatory eye diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular disorders, and infectious and autoimmune uveitis. His approach emphasizes careful diagnosis, evidence-based therapies, and clear communication with patients and referring doctors.

Dr. Bellur earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Houston Medical School, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed his ophthalmology residency at George Washington University, where he served as Chief Resident and received the Zimmerman Award for excellence in patient and surgical care. He then completed a combined Medical Retina and Uveitis fellowship at the National Eye Institute (NIH) in Bethesda.

Dr. Bellur is deeply committed to advancing ophthalmology through research, focusing on innovative ophthalmic imaging techniques and immunosuppression therapies. He has numerous peer-reviewed publications and serves as a reviewer for the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Basic and Clinical Science Course. Outside the office, he enjoys photography, culinary exploration, hiking, and traveling.
