Dr. Russell Read

Dr. Russell W. Read is a board-certified ophthalmologist and uveitis specialist at Retina Consultants of Alabama. His clinical practice is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of uveitis and ocular inflammatory diseases, providing expert care for complex retinal conditions.

Dr. Read's research focuses on understanding the underlying reasons for health disparities among patients with uveitis. He uses clinical data from patient care clinics to identify factors that predict disease severity and outcomes, and also explores the effect of melanin on uveitis using animal models. His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the EyeSight Foundation of Alabama, the International Retinal Research Foundation, and The Matthews Foundation.

Dr. Read completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Washington Medical Center and a fellowship in uveitis and ocular inflammatory diseases at the Doheny Eye Institute. He is the recipient of a Research to Prevent Blindness Physician-Scientist Award and has been selected as one of the “Best Doctors in America” yearly since 2005. He currently chairs the uveitis committees for the American Academy of Ophthalmology's main teaching texts and serves as the executive secretary for the American Uveitis Society.
