About Me
Dr. Jeffrey Crain is an associate professor and the director of the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center Ophthalmology Service. He manages the daily operations of this clinic, which provides care to approximately 11,500 patients each year. Dr. Crain is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. His clinical practice focuses on comprehensive ophthalmology, including cataract surgery and the management of common eye conditions.
Dr. Crain is actively involved in training the next generation of eye surgeons. He participates in the resident training program and has a particular interest in teaching cataract surgery. At the Veterans Affairs Clinic, third-year ophthalmology residents often serve as primary surgeons under his supervision. To advance surgical training, Dr. Crain is leading a project to develop synthetic eye models that mimic human anatomy and behavior during procedures, similar to flight simulators in aviation.
