About Me

Dr. Michael J. Heiferman is a vitreoretinal surgeon and ocular oncologist at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary (UIC) and a staff physician at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. He completed medical school at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, ophthalmology residency at Northwestern University McGaw Medical Center, a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at UIC, and an ocular oncology fellowship at Stanford University’s Byers Eye Institute. He also earned an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

Dr. Heiferman cares for ocular tumors, including melanoma and hemangiomas, as well as metastatic cancers to the eye. He treats a full range of vitreoretinal disorders, such as diabetic retinopathy, macular pucker and macular holes, central serous chorioretinopathy, and complications after cataract surgery. His clinical work is informed by interests in translational cancer research and advanced retinal imaging, with a focus on earlier detection and personalized treatment planning.
