About Me

Dr. Michael A. Albert, Jr. is a vitreoretinal surgeon and ophthalmologist. He serves as Vice President at Retina Consultants of Alabama, P.C. in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Albert is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Albert completed a vitreoretinal disease and surgery fellowship at Retina Consultants of Alabama from 2005 to 2007. He then completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine and Callahan Eye Hospital from 2002 to 2005, where he also served as Chief Resident from 2004 to 2005. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from West Virginia University School of Medicine from 1997 to 2001 and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Virginia from 1992 to 1996.

Dr. Albert is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and holds an Alabama medical license. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, among other professional societies. He has received several honors, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award in 2012 and the Outstanding Resident Teacher Award from the UAB Department of Ophthalmology in 2005. His clinical specializations include diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, choroidal melanoma, retinal tears and detachments, retinopathy of prematurity, macular hole, and macular pucker.
