About Me

Dr. Matthew Pfannenstiel is a vitreoretinal surgeon in training serving patients at Retina Associates of Kentucky in Lexington. He diagnoses and treats the full spectrum of medical and surgical retina conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal tears and detachments, and complex macular disorders such as macular holes and epiretinal membranes. Patients appreciate his thorough evaluations, clear communication, and commitment to evidence-based care. A Lawrence, Kansas native, Dr. Pfannenstiel earned a Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Neuroscience from the University of Kansas and his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He then completed an internship in internal medicine and ophthalmology residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he was selected by faculty to serve as chief resident and received the Nellie V. Warren Rising Star Award. He has presented retina research at national meetings, including AAO, ASRS, and ARVO, and is dedicated to helping patients understand their options and make confident decisions about their vision.
