About Me
Dr. Mark Levitan is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical management of diseases of the retina, vitreous, and macula, including macular degeneration, macular holes, retinal detachment, and diabetic retinopathy. He has served as Principal Investigator for clinical research studies involving novel pharmacological therapies.
A New York native, Dr. Levitan completed his medical degree at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, followed by an internal medicine internship and ophthalmology residency at the Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn. He concluded his training with a vitreoretinal fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Levitan has served in academic roles including Retinal Service Director at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and clinical assistant professor, and later joined the retina staff at Wills Eye Hospital. He has been with Austin Retina since 2002.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Levitan has lectured nationally on vitreoretinal pathology and provides community service through patient education seminars and lectures to Central Texas medical professionals. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, and Texas Ophthalmological Association.
