About Me
John J. Chen, M.D., Ph.D. is a neuro-ophthalmologist and Professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology at Mayo Clinic. He specializes in diagnosing and treating visual disorders that stem from neurological conditions, providing comprehensive care for patients with complex eye and brain-related issues. Dr. Chen collaborates closely with specialists in neurology, rheumatology, and neurosurgery to ensure integrated management of conditions affecting vision.
He completed his MD and PhD at the University of Virginia, followed by ophthalmology residency and neuro-ophthalmology fellowship training at the University of Iowa. His clinical and research expertise focuses on optic neuritis, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and advanced retinal imaging techniques. Dr. Chen serves as the Neuro-Ophthalmology fellowship director, training the next generation of specialists in this field.
As an Associate Editor for Ophthalmology and the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology, Dr. Chen contributes to academic literature and has authored over 250 peer-reviewed articles. He is actively involved in professional societies, including the American Board of Ophthalmology and the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, and has received numerous awards for his clinical, educational, and academic leadership.
