About Me
Dr. John G. Clarkson is an internationally recognized vitreoretinal specialist and academic leader who shaped the landscape of medical education and eye health for over four decades. He served as dean of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine from 1995 to 2006, leading a landmark capital campaign and overseeing unprecedented growth in research and academic excellence. Under his leadership, the school was renamed the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.
As chair of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Dr. Clarkson led the institute to its first of 24 No. 1 national rankings and extended world-class care by launching its first satellite facility in Palm Beach County. His distinguished career has been recognized with top honors, including the Lucien Howe Medal and the America’s Top Doctors’ National Physician of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award.
Even in retirement, Dr. Clarkson continues to contribute as executive director of the Ophthalmology Research Foundation and volunteers at an eye clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina. He remains a devoted grandfather to five.
