About Me
Dr. Carl S. Wilkins is a vitreoretinal surgeon and specialist in ocular inflammatory disease. He earned his bachelor's degree in neuroscience from Vanderbilt University and his medical degree from FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in Miami. His training includes a surgical internship and ophthalmology residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, followed by fellowships in vitreoretinal surgery at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai and ocular immunology and uveitis at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Before joining the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institution (MERSI) in August 2025, Dr. Wilkins served as an assistant professor at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the American Uveitis Society. His research focuses on drug delivery studies and cohort studies of rare diseases, and he is currently the principal investigator for the multicenter Acute Retinal Necrosis cohort study.
Dr. Wilkins's clinical expertise encompasses diabetic retinopathy, vitreoretinal surgery, anterior and posterior segment surgery in uveitic diseases, cataract and secondary lens surgery, and participation in clinical trials. He is committed to providing advanced care for patients with complex retinal and inflammatory eye conditions.
