Dr. Boleslav Kotlyar

Dr. Boleslav Kotlyar is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist at Vitreous Retina Macula Specialists of New Jersey, where he specializes in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, he emigrated to the United States in 1993 and attended Stuyvesant High School. He then pursued undergraduate studies at New York University, completing his degree in just three years cum laude with a major in biology and a minor in history. His interest in retina care was sparked while working as the head ophthalmic technician and photographer at a retina practice in Brooklyn, which inspired him to study medicine at SUNY Buffalo.

During medical school, Dr. Kotlyar served as president of both the Surgery Interest Group and the Ophthalmology Interest Group. He completed his preliminary internal medicine year at Newark Beth Israel in Newark, New Jersey, where he was honored with the Preliminary Medicine Intern of the Year award. He then completed his ophthalmology residency at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, New York, followed by a fellowship in adult and pediatric vitreoretinal surgery at Retina Consultants Limited/Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Kotlyar is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists. Fluent in English and Russian with basic Spanish skills, he enjoys traveling, Ultimate Frisbee, cooking, and science fiction outside of his medical practice.
