About Me
Benjamin J. Fowler, MD, PhD, is a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon who cares for adults with medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous. He evaluates and treats conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and complex retinal injuries, pairing meticulous diagnostics with patient-centered discussions about risks, benefits, and recovery. Patients value his calm communication style and the way he maps a clear plan from the first visit through follow-up.
Dr. Fowler earned his MD and PhD in Physiology at the University of Kentucky, completed ophthalmology residency at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, and then pursued vitreoretinal fellowship training at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. His research on retinal disease includes work published in leading journals and recognition from the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation. At Maine Eye Center’s Retina Center in Portland, he collaborates with a multidisciplinary team and uses advanced imaging and microsurgical techniques to preserve and restore sight while keeping care convenient for patients and families.
