Meet Dr. Thomas Mendel

About Me

Thomas Mendel, MD, PhD, is a vitreoretinal surgeon at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He treats both children and adults with medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous, and places a strong emphasis on patient education so decisions are made together. Common problems he manages include retinal detachment, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions and macular degeneration. Dr. Mendel leads the pediatric retina service in partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital, expanding access to specialized care for complex retinal conditions in young patients. As a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, he balances a busy surgical practice with teaching and mentorship. Patients can expect careful explanations, thoughtful discussion of risks and benefits, and a plan tailored to vision needs and lifestyle. He is dedicated to advancing high-quality retina care across the region while maintaining a welcoming, team-based environment.
