About Me

Dr. Philip Ames is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained retina specialist at Coastal Eye Institute. A Sarasota native, he graduated from the University of Miami with a double degree in Chemistry and Biology before earning his medical degree at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He completed ophthalmology residency at the University of Florida and advanced fellowship training in vitreoretinal disease and surgery at the Charles Retina Institute under the mentorship of world-renowned surgeon Dr. Steve Charles. Since 2021, Dr. Ames has brought his skills and calm, patient-first approach to the Gulf Coast community.

Dr. Ames treats a wide range of retinal disorders, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears and detachment, macular holes, and complications that cause flashes and floaters. He offers laser and surgical therapies tailored to each patient’s needs and takes time to explain findings and options in clear, practical terms. His goal is to protect and restore vision with compassionate care and the latest advances in retinal surgery and imaging.
