About Me
Dr. Paul Yang is an ophthalmologist specializing in genetic and inflammatory eye diseases. Born in Taiwan and raised in Bellevue, Washington, he completed undergraduate degrees in bioengineering and biochemistry at the University of Washington. During this time, he received summer research grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Mary Gates Endowment.
He earned his M.D. and Ph.D. from Dartmouth Medical School, funded by a National Institutes of Health award. Dr. Yang completed an internal medicine internship at the University of Utah, followed by ophthalmology residency and fellowship at the Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City. He pursued additional fellowships in ocular immunology and uveitis in Massachusetts and in ophthalmic genetics at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland.
Currently, Dr. Yang serves as Chief of the Paul H. Casey Ophthalmic Genetics Division and is the Martha and Eddie Peterson Endowed Professor at OHSU Casey Eye Institute. His clinical expertise includes retinal dystrophies, congenital genetic diseases, gene therapy-associated uveitis, autoimmune retinopathy, and cataract surgery for inherited retinal degenerations. He is actively involved in research to understand immune-mediated damage in these conditions and leads multiple gene therapy clinical trials aimed at treating retinitis pigmentosa.
