About Me
Dr. Marena Patronas is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in diseases of the retina and vitreous. She diagnoses and treats complex retinal conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, retinal vascular disease, and macular degeneration. Her expertise encompasses advanced vitreoretinal surgical care.
Before joining Virginia Retina Center, Dr. Patronas served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she was actively involved in medical education and clinical research. She served as the certified ophthalmologist for the multicenter EDIC trial and participated in clinical trials exploring the effects of chemotherapeutic agents on the eye and retina.
Dr. Patronas earned her medical degree from Georgetown University and completed her ophthalmology residency at St. Vincent Catholic Medical Center–Manhattan. She pursued a fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School. She previously practiced in Ohio with Retina Associates and the Retina Group of Columbus, bringing a wealth of experience to her patients at the Virginia Retina Center.
