Dr. Marc Steffen Schmitz-Valckenberg

Dr. Steffen Schmitz-Valckenberg specializes in the clinical and surgical treatment of macular and retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD). He is an expert in high-resolution retinal imaging, using advanced techniques to map disease progression and guide patient care.

Previously, he co-founded and directed the Grading of Digital Fundus Examination Reading Center at the University of Bonn in Germany, where he served as assistant medical director of the Department of Ophthalmology. His research in retinal imaging is used worldwide to measure outcomes in clinical trials.

At the Moran Eye Center, he directs an ophthalmic image reading center that plays a key role in translational research for new AMD therapies. Dr. Schmitz-Valckenberg holds a Jon M. Huntsman Presidential Chair at the University of Utah and is a prolific researcher recognized as a leading rising star in ophthalmology.
