About Me

Dr. Paul S. Bernstein is a retina specialist at the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah, where he has been a faculty member since 1995. His clinical practice focuses on the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the retina, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), inherited retinal and macular dystrophies, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachments. Dr. Bernstein places special emphasis on the role of nutrition and environment in the treatment and prevention of AMD.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Bernstein is actively involved in basic science retina research and has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He holds the Val A. and Edith D. Green Presidential Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and serves as Vice-Chair for Clinical and Basic Science Research at Moran. Dr. Bernstein is also dedicated to bringing modern vitreoretinal services to underserved parts of the world, providing hands-on specialty training in countries such as Nepal, Ghana, Ethiopia, and Bhutan.

Dr. Bernstein's clinical expertise also includes the diagnosis and management of macular telangiectasia type 2, a hereditary disease that causes central vision loss. He is among the first researchers to test fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO), a new non-invasive retinal imaging technique.
