Meet Dr. Monika Fleckenstein

Dr. Monika Fleckenstein specializes in the diagnosis and medical management of retinal diseases with a particular emphasis on age-related macular degeneration (AMD). She joined the John A. Moran Eye Center in 2019 as a Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. After earning her medical degree from the University of Heidelberg, she trained as a research fellow at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University and completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Bonn.

Dr. Fleckenstein’s clinical work is closely integrated with translational research using high-resolution retinal imaging to characterize AMD subtypes and identify prognostic biomarkers. She has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and 25 book chapters, and serves on scientific review committees for national and international organizations.
