About Me
Kristen Nwanyanwu, MD, is an ophthalmologist who specializes in vitreoretinal surgery, focusing on the vitreous gel inside the eye. She commonly treats patients with eye conditions related to trauma, diabetes, and age-related macular degeneration.
Dr. Nwanyanwu describes eye surgery as extremely delicate, often comparing it to separating tissue paper underwater with tweezers. She uses precision instruments like needles and lasers to manipulate eye tissue. Her desire to become a doctor began in childhood, reinforced by helping her brother manage care for a brain tumor. In medical school, she saw how eye problems, from small issues like macular holes to serious ones like retinal detachment, significantly impact patients' lives.
She is an assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual science at Yale School of Medicine and practices at the Yale Eye Center. Dr. Nwanyanwu values the collaborative environment, working closely with specialists in glaucoma, ocular oncology, uveitis, and cornea to provide comprehensive care. She is accepting new patients and offers telehealth appointments.
