About Me
Dr. Joel S. Schuman is an ophthalmologist at Wills Eye Hospital, where he serves as Vice Chair for Research Innovation and Co-Director of the Glaucoma Service. He specializes in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma and has a particular interest in early detection and novel diagnostics for eye disease. With more than 30 years of experience, Dr. Schuman is known for his compassionate patient care and groundbreaking research.
Dr. Schuman was part of the team that invented optical coherence tomography (OCT), a non-invasive imaging technology that provides high-resolution 3D mapping of the eye and has become essential for diagnosing and managing glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. He also helped identify the first molecular marker for human glaucoma. His current research explores stem cell treatments and artificial intelligence to improve imaging technology and diagnostics.
Dr. Schuman is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and holds a professorship in ophthalmology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He continues to see patients and lead research initiatives aimed at advancing the understanding and treatment of eye disease.
