About Me
Dr. Eliza Longstreet Barnwell is a fellowship-trained comprehensive ophthalmologist who focuses on cataract and anterior segment surgery. She has a special interest in complex cataract extraction and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), and is committed to clear communication and collaborative decision-making so patients understand their options and feel confident in their care.
A Charleston native, Dr. Barnwell earned her medical degree at the Medical University of South Carolina, completed an internship at MUSC, and finished ophthalmology residency at Wake Forest University, where she served as chief resident. She completed fellowship training at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. After fellowship, she returned to MUSC, where she has led the Ocular Trauma Service and pursued additional training in glaucoma management.
Dr. Barnwell is dedicated to service and education. She has collaborated on humanitarian eye-care initiatives locally and internationally and enjoys teaching medical students and residents. She has also served as a course instructor in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS). Patients appreciate her thoughtful, patient-first approach and her focus on safety, vision, and long-term results.
