Dr. Carolina Mercado Acosta

Carolina L. Mercado, MD, is a cornea, cataract and refractive specialist with a focus on challenging ocular surface disease. She evaluates and treats ocular surface tumors, infectious keratitis and corneal ectasias, and performs advanced corneal transplantation for high-risk eyes as well as cataract and anterior segment reconstruction. Dr. Mercado also offers corneal collagen cross-linking for progressive keratoconus and applies high-resolution anterior segment OCT to refine diagnosis and monitoring.

Dr. Mercado earned her medical degree and completed a clinical internship at Universidad del Norte (Colombia), followed by ophthalmology residency at the Escuela Superior de Oftalmología, Instituto Barraquer de América. At Bascom Palmer Eye Institute she completed fellowships in cornea and external disease and in medical retina, and has contributed research validating topical 5-fluorouracil for ocular surface neoplasia and methods to improve corneal transplant outcomes. She welcomes patients across the age spectrum and offers care in English and Spanish.
