About Me

Dr. Brett Shapiro is an ophthalmologist practicing with the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group on Maui. His medical journey was shaped by a Fulbright scholarship in Germany, where living with an ophthalmologist and his son who had a serious eye condition led Dr. Shapiro to pursue a career in eye care. He believes providing care extends beyond fixing a problem and strives to ensure every patient has a good experience, taking time to connect with patients and their families.

Dr. Shapiro practices within a team-based model at HPMG, which he finds allows him to deliver high-quality care through genuine support from colleagues. He stays current with the latest research and developments in ophthalmology by subscribing to key medical journals and attending conferences. His personal approach includes enjoying time with toddlers and concerned parents to better understand who they are outside the clinic.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Shapiro enjoys hiking and exploring the outdoors, a passion he and his wife share through evening walks on Maui and tending their vegetable garden. This connection to nature helps him maintain a healthy perspective on what is important in life and patient care.
