Dr. Abigail Nieuwsma

Abigail Nieuwsma, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist at Southwest Eye Care who enjoys caring for the small organ that shapes how we experience the world. She provides comprehensive medical and surgical eye care and welcomes patients for routine exams as well as complex problems. Dr. Nieuwsma completed ophthalmology residency at UT Health San Antonio after earning her medical degree from the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine and a magna cum laude Bachelor of Science in Biology from Bethel University.

Her clinical work spans cataracts, glaucoma, corneal disease, and retinal conditions, and she partners closely with patients to explain findings, outline options, and tailor care to their goals—whether that involves cataract surgery with the right lens choice or medical and laser therapies to protect sight. Dr. Nieuwsma has presented research at national meetings including ARVO and ASCRS and enjoys giving back through mentorship and community clinics.
