About Me

Viren Rana, DO, is a retinal specialist and vitreoretinal surgeon at South Coast Retina Center. He cares for patients with age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinal disease, retinal tears and detachments, macular pucker, and complex post-traumatic problems. Dr. Rana also performs secondary intraocular lens repair and participates in clinical trials so eligible patients can access emerging therapies.

Born in New York City and raised in Michigan, Dr. Rana graduated cum laude from Saint Louis University with dual degrees in Broadcasting Journalism and Biology, earned his medical degree at Kansas City University School of Medicine, and completed a Master’s in Clinical Anatomy and Medical Education. He finished an internal-medicine internship and then an ophthalmology residency at Brown University, serving as Chief Resident, before advanced vitreoretinal surgery fellowship training at Yale University. Board-certified in ophthalmology, he brings a calm, communicative style to each visit and helps patients understand their imaging, treatment choices, and recovery plan.
