About Me
Dr. Veeral Shah is a pediatric neuro-ophthalmologist who specializes in treating conditions related to the interactions between the eyes and the brain. He focuses on complex disorders impacting the ocular pathway, optic nerves, retinas and cranial nerves that come from the central nervous system. Patients typically come to him after seeing their eye doctor, whether an ophthalmologist or optometrist, and his expertise encompasses both neurology and ophthalmology.
Dr. Shah believes knowledge is power and dedicates time to ensure patients and their families understand the complexity of neuro-ophthalmic issues. He performs comprehensive neuro-ophthalmology exams and complex testing, which he reviews and discusses with the child and family in terms of diagnosis and care management plans. He also believes in a holistic approach to care, assuring families that he will address any and all issues in the child's overall development and vision for as long as they need him.
His clinical and basic research focuses on the molecular genetics of optic nerve protection and development, and neuro-oncology. He studies idiopathic intracranial hypertension and multiple optic neuropathies including demyelinating disease, traumatic optic neuropathy and hereditary optic neuropathy. He also researches vision development, specifically abnormal ocular movements such as nystagmus, focusing on developing new treatments for improved vision outcomes.
