About Me
Dr. Tiarnán Keenan is a staff clinician and Stadtman Investigator at the National Eye Institute whose work centers on adult retinal disease, particularly age-related macular degeneration (AMD). His clinical and research program spans genetics, biochemistry, imaging, epidemiology, and clinical trials to improve diagnosis, understand mechanisms, and develop more effective prevention and treatment strategies for AMD, including geographic atrophy. Patients and collaborators value his ability to translate cutting-edge data into practical, patient-centered care strategies.
Dr. Keenan received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Oxford. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester for biochemical analyses of human macular tissue related to AMD and completed fellowship training in medical retinal disease at the National Eye Institute. His prior academic-clinical training included work at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and the Oxford Eye Hospital, and he is a fellow of the UK Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
