About Me
Robert K. Koenekoop, MD, PhD, is a pediatric ophthalmologist and ocular geneticist whose practice focuses on children and families affected by inherited retinal diseases. At the Montreal Children’s Hospital, he combines clinical care with leadership in McGill University’s Ocular Genetics Laboratory, helping patients navigate diagnosis, genetic testing, counseling, and access to emerging therapies. He sees children with conditions such as Leber congenital amaurosis and retinitis pigmentosa and partners with low-vision specialists and support resources to optimize vision and independence.
Dr. Koenekoop completed residency and medical training at McGill University and advanced fellowship training in ocular genetics and pediatric ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University. His research has contributed to the discovery of disease-causing genes and early clinical trials of gene-based therapies. Families can expect a compassionate, thorough evaluation, practical guidance about school and daily activities, and a long-term care plan tailored to each child.
