About Me
Dr. Kara Cavuoto is a comprehensive ophthalmologist and pediatric ophthalmologist at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, where she serves as the medical director of the Emergency Department. She ensures 24-hour eye care is available for patients with urgent ocular conditions, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Cavuoto is also the director of medical student education, implementing innovative teaching methods to train future eye care providers.
Her clinical expertise includes pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, and emergency ophthalmology, with a focus on conditions such as pediatric amblyopia and complex strabismus in both children and adults. Dr. Cavuoto is an active researcher, investigating pediatric eye disorders, strabismus surgery techniques, and ocular surface microbiology. She has received multiple awards for her contributions to patient care, education, and research, including the 2020 Honor Award from the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and the 2020 Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of Miami.
